"...Disconnection also may apply to the photos of Mark Keith Adams, professor at Rowan University in New Jersey. It's a matter of subjects apparently "disconnecting" from the fact that they're being photographed.
The display, in Amarillo College's Lynn Library Southern Light Gallery, is titled "In Search of Common Ground." In comment with the show, Adams states, "These images are from an ongoing portrait series of artists ... while they may not capture the essence of a person, in some cases they can record personal moments we all find familiar in their casual articulation."
"Casual articulation" is all in black and white. The photos "Beverly" and "Norm" have an aspect of considered composition, whereas others seem to catch their subjects in mid-accident - "Briana" scratching herself and "Dave" leaping up out of sight.
In "Alphonso" and "Kym" the subjects appear positioned in relation to light - which is always deftly alert - but overall the imagery is casual.
The images present informal, first-time meetings. But I felt, on a second visit, increased empathy for who was there, as well as more admiration for the "how" of their imaging." -Hunter Ingalls, Amarillo Globe-News
